What is depression?
Depression isn’t just “feeling sad” or “down.”
Rather, depression is a health condition that affects the whole person and those around them. You can recognize the symptoms of depression by watching for warning signs, such as:

Many people experience depression after a major loss, such as the death of a loved one or losing one’s job. Some become depressed as a result of chronic stress, such as overworking or being burned out. And some experience depression “out of the blue,” where the symptoms emerge without a clear cause (in those cases, consider consulting with a physician as well to identify any medical causes of depression). Some people are more at risk for developing depressive symptoms than others, especially those who lack adequate social and emotional support.
Other common causes of depression might include:
- Significant life changes (e.g., going to college, changing careers, getting married)
- Financial stress or unemployment
- Experiencing an injury or serious medical condition
- Having a baby (postpartum and perinatal depression)
- Breaking up with a partner
- Changes in diet or medication
