Do I need therapy for self-esteem issues?
Self-esteem is all about how you see yourself.
Many of us feel like we aren’t good enough. We make ourselves feel miserable when we compare ourselves to others, and we agonize over what others must think of us. Sometimes, we’ve been treated with disrespect for so long that we can no longer respect ourselves.
Low (or poor) self-esteem is a common symptom that crops up when people are anxious or depressed, but it can also happen as the result of hardships in life:
- Public embarrassment or humiliation
- Being put down or shamed at work
- Rejection or abandonment
- Abuse (physical, emotional, sexual)
- Loss of employment
- Being compared to high-achieving peers or siblings
No matter what caused your difficulties with self-esteem, therapy can help.
How can therapy help with my self-esteem?
Therapy for self-esteem issues isn’t all about changing how you see yourself – it’s about changing how you value yourself.
You see, self-esteem issues arise because we lose sight of our worth. We get so caught up in what others might think that forget who we are and what matters most – which over time creates a self-defeating cycle:
Other-comparison and judgment lead to self-criticism. Self-criticism and negativity feed into hopelessness, exhaustion and burnout. As you fail to meet your goals and miss opportunities for success, this just adds fuel to the cycle.
Therapy for self-esteem issues helps you break the cycle, challenge beliefs that hold you back, and recognize your true worth. Over time, you can set aside needs for self-esteem and begin to build a strong, healthy sense of self-worth.
If you are ready to break the cycle and find freedom from low self-esteem, contact me today.
What does therapy look like with Laureen DiMattia?
Buddha is credited with this quote:
“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”
As a therapist, I want to help you do just that.
Each session is completely confidential and specifically designed to meet your goals. Our first meeting is all about helping us get to know each other, and I’ll ask lots of questions about your story to get a sense of what might be contributing to feelings of low self-esteem.
My therapy incorporates techniques from the best available treatment modalities, such as psychodynamic, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy). Occasionally, low self-esteem may be rooted in trauma, which means we may consider using EMDR to help address traumatic memories. My job as your therapist is to work myself out of a job, which means helping you reach your goals as quickly and effectively as possible.
Therapy for self-esteem issues can help you learn to:
- Practice self-compassion
- Feel grateful and fulfilled
- Discover hidden strengths and talents
- Have a realistic self-image
- Recognize your victories
- Build a strong, healthy sense of self-worth
I call my practice Seasons of Strength for a reason.
All of us experience hardship. All of us go through times where we feel helpless, defeated, and broken. All of us live through ups and downs, through misery and joy. I believe that, no matter what life has thrown your way, you have the power to make things better. You can find your source of strength, freedom, and control.
Together, we can make that happen.
